Greg LeMond is in Ireland next week and fans can see him at a public interview with Shane Stokes, where the triple Tour de France winner will speak about a range of issues from his career triumphs to his more recent dispute with Lance Armstrong.

Irish sporting fans will have a rare chance at in depth insight into the mind, physiology and career of one of the greatest riders of all time next Friday June 14th, with Greg LeMond participating in a lengthy interview about his experiences of pro cycling.

Taking place thirty years after he won the first of his two world road race championship titles, the American will discuss those triumphs, his three Tour de France victories and other highlights from a glittering career in one of the most memorable periods in the sport.

LeMond will discuss his rise as a top amateur, the difficulties he faced when he moved to Europe, his first professional experiences and the early successes and defeats of his career, as well as those Grand Tour successes.

He’ll speak at length about his rivalries and sporting relationships with other giants of the sport such as Bernard Hinault, Laurent Fignon, Sean Kelly, Stephen Roche, Pedro Delgado and others, and talk frankly about the fallout with Hinault during the 1986 Tour de France.

LeMond will also give rare details of his near fatal hunting accident in early 1987 and explain the physical and mental difficulties which followed the shooting. Peppered with shotgun pellets, he fought back to the centre stage with his astounding triumph in the 1989 Tour de France, still believed by many to be the greatest race of all time.

That cliff hanger saw him edge ahead of Laurent Fignon in the final day time trial by just eight seconds; to this day, it remains the closest Tour finish of all time.

The difficulties of the nineties will also be discussed frankly by LeMond, as well as the EPO epidemic in the sport which made it more and more difficult for clean riders to compete. His clash with Lance Armstrong will also be a topic at the interview, which will take place in front of a large audience in Limerick’s Lime Tree theatre.

The talk is a rare opportunity to gain an insight into the life of a professional athlete, including the dizzying transition from a talented amateur to a global sports star.

LeMond will be interviewed at length by leading cycling journalist Shane Stokes. Questions will also be taken from the audience, enabling those present to gain their own perspective on the American’s career. The evening will also feature video highlights from some of his top victories.

This event is promoted by The Get Back Challenge charity and all proceeds from the fifteen euro admission go towards supporting its work in supporting Limerick youth participation in sport.

Tickets can be purchased directly from the Lime Tree theatre website http://www.limetreetheatre.ie/ or by calling 061 774774. Early booking is recommended.
