
The woman killed while cycling in Co Monaghan yesterday afternoon has been named as Jenny Drew (74), who was an avid recreational cyclist. A mother of two, Ms Drew was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Cootehill Road, close to Monaghan Town, at about 1.20pm.
Gardaí have launched an investigation into the fatal crash and have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident, or who was recording dashcam footage in the area at the time, to come forward and aid the investigation.
Her death notice said she would be "sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband, Matt, her daughter Karen, son Barry, son in law Anthony, her sister Mary and extended family and friends".
Ms Drew, from Beaghkearns in Monaghan Town, was a well known figure in the town and was very active in meals on wheels, caring for other elderly people in the area. An online book of condolences has been opened for her, with a large number of people paying tribute, saying she would be very sadly missed.
"Shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic and sudden passing of Jenny. What a lovely lady," said one. "We often met her and Matt in Glaslough in recent years at our ‘coffee stop’ while out cycling. Sincere condolences to Matt, Karen and Barry. May she test in peace."
Another added: "So shocking to hear of Jenny’s tragic passing. She was such a friendly face on our road and no doubt will be very terribly missed by all who knew her. Sending love and strength to all her family and friends at this very difficult time."
Another person who paid tribute, said: "So sad to hear this news. I worked with Jenny briefly many years ago and she left a lasting impression on me. She was so kind and maternal a real lady. Condolences to Matt Karen Barry and her sister Mary. Rip Jenny."
Ms Drew's death brings to five the number of cyclists killed on the roads of the Republic since the start of the year. Road deaths have been increasing this year as 152 people had lost their lives as of last Friday, some 35 higher than last year.
