The death has occurred of Irish club cyclist and triathlete, Sarah Fagan, who has sadly passed away after getting into difficulty during the swim while competing in a triathlon in France. A member of Cuchulainn Cycling Club and Setenta Tri Club, she was competing in the Alpe d'Huez Triathlon when she got into difficulty.

The 48-year-old, from Mountpleasant, Dundalk, Co Louth, was found unresponsive in Lake Verney, Allemon, during the swim and later died at a nearby hospital in Grenoble, where she was airlifted.

While Ms Fagan was racing on Friday, and passed away on Saturday, news of her death only emerged publicly in Ireland today. The organisers of the Alpe d'Huez Triathlon confirmed she had died and said a post mortem would determine her cause of death.

"Our thoughts are with the family of the victim, who was a member of our community," said director of the event, Cyrille NeveuIt. "It is very difficult to accept this tragedy. Despite the safety protocols in place and the risks inherent in triathlon, we are obviously deeply shocked and devastated by this tragedy."

Sarah will leave us with a massive hole in our hearts," the club said. "As evident in all pictures of her, she had such a glow and warmth to her, always smiling and was so encouraging with her kind words.
