The death has occurred of cyclist Gordon Scott at a time trial event in Co Down today.
Gordon, a veteran rider with East Antrim Audi CC, had just completed his ride in a 10 mile time trial at Warrenpoint when he collapsed and sadly died.
The race was organised by Velo Club Iveagh and this evening the club has extended its sympathies to Gordon’s family.
"It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Gordon Scott," the club said in a statement.
"He had been competing at our Co Down time trial and passed away in hospital after finishing his ride. Our thoughts and prayers are with Gordon's wife and family."
Gordon, known as Scotty to many on the cycling scene, was hugely popular and there have been hundreds of tributes to him on social media at the time of writing.
Gordon was a regular at both road races and time trials and was always a tough and competitive rider.
He had been racing since his teens and represented Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games in 1982.
His family had been hit by tragedy less than two years ago when Gordon's and his wife Kriston's eldest son William died suddenly aged 19 years.
Gordon is survived by Kriston and two sons Stephen and Alex.
We would like to take this opportunity at stickybottle to extend our sympathies to Kriston, Stephen and Alex, as well as all of Gordon’s club mates and the many friends who knew him in the cycling community.
