The cycling community north and south of the Border has lost one of its emerging young members after the death of Adam Newell in a workplace accident.
The teenager, who raced on the road this year with East Tyrone CC, was laid to reset yesterday and his club and others who knew him during his all too short life have paid tribute to him.
“Adam was
a talented young rider who loved racing and competitive cycling,” East Tyrone CC said in a statement, adding
it had learned of Adam’s death with great sadness.
“He had a
natural ability on the bike and was a very popular member of our club. We all
have fond memories of Adam and he will be sorely missed.
“We extend our most sincere and heartfelt sympathies to Adam’s family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad time.”
Adam worked as an electrician and died while working in Moneymore, Co Derry, last Saturday morning. The 18-year-old was from Coagh in Co Tyrone and is survived by his parents Andrew and Mary and his two sisters Jemma and Megan.
He was a former pupil of Cookstown High School, which
issued a statement paying tribute to him and expressing its shock at the sudden
and untimely passing of a very popular former pupil.
“It was with extreme shock and sadness that the sudden and tragic death of the former pupil was received by the school community,” it said. “Adam was a fun-loving and sociable pupil who was known and well liked across the school for the duration of his five years in Cookstown High School.
“Many of his peers are current Year 14 pupils and it is among his many friends and of course his loving family that his death will be felt most keenly.
"His sister Megan, a former pupil, and Jemma, current Year 12 pupil, will be remembered in prayer by the school community, as will his parents and wider family circle.”
Adam’s funeral took place at Donaghendry Parish Church, Stewartstown, yesterday afternoon followed by interment in the adjoining churchyard.
We’d like to extend our sympathies to Adam’s parents and
his sisters as well as his club mates and all of his friends in the cycling
community.
