Cyclist hit by car while training fighting for his life in Dublin hospital

Gardai are investigating a serious collision in which a car hit two cyclists out training, leaving one fighting for his life in hospital.

 

A cyclist has suffered life threatening injuries after he was hit by a car on a popular road with bike riders in north Co Dublin this afternoon, Sunday.

The man, who is believed to be Polish, was taken from the scene by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital in north Dublin.

He was the most seriously hurt in the collision and gardai have said his injuries are life threatening.

Another rider who was with him was also injured, and though his life is not at risk he was also taken to Beaumont Hospital by ambulance.

It is understood a third man was riding with them, though at the time of writing that was not confirmed.

The collision occurred at around 1pm near Turvey Avenue on the old N1 road between Lush and Donabate.

The crash scene is very near Blake’s Cross; an area very well known to cyclists in and around Dublin as it leads to a number of training routes taking Rush, Lusk, Skerries and Balbriggan.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the cyclists was not injured in the collision.

The scene of the crash was closed immediately it occurred and diversions are in place as Garda forensic experts carry out an examination of the area.

The road was closed in both directions and remained sealed off this evening as the Garda's investigation continued into what appears to be a very serious collision.

Gardai have also appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or who was in the area at the time, to come forward and contact them.
