MTB rider Simon Andreassen injured in training crash: Having been knocked out, concussed and suffered broken bones to his face he said others around him at the time came to his rescue. But for them, and his helmet, he believes he would have died.
MTB rider Simon Andreassen injured in training crash
Danish pro mountain biker Simon Andreassen has warned other riders not to train alone after suffering a very bad fall out training.
And while his words were addressed to his fellow mountain bikers, it is perhaps a lesson roadies can take on board too.
That’s especially so given the inclement weather we’ve been having in Ireland of late.
The 20-year-old former junior world MTB champion, and cyclocross international, was riding in Stellenbosch, Western Cape, when he had a serious fall.
As a result he suffered concussion and other injuries. And he believes wearing a helmet, and having other people around when he was knocked out, saved his life.
“Today did not go as planned,” he said. “Suddenly I woke up in the hospital, in a lot of pain. No idea how I got there whatsoever.
“It’s a strange feeling to be unconscious for so long, and get total memory loss.
“Went through the X-rays; (suffered) a fractured cheekbone, a big concussion. Being bruised up everywhere is taken as being really lucky in this situation.
“I want to thank everyone who took care of me today, and helped me through this. You guys saved me big time.
"Never ride trails alone, and always use a helmet, it saved my life today.”
Warning for road cyclists training alone
For road riders, always bring money and your phone if you’re training alone. And if the weather is bad, maybe rein in your training plans a little.
Furthermore, avoid really quiet roads where you would lay undiscovered for a long time if something happened to you and you were knocked out.
At present, with snow hitting the country; don’t even think about training outdoors.
It will pass in a day or two and normal service will resume. Either take a break or limit yourself to indoor sessions.
