Track: Schoolboy Ryan takes ‘Duane Delaney GP’ at Sundrive Road

Sorrento's Fintan Ryan
The Duane Delaney Track Grand Prix, hosted by Raven CRT, was won at the weekend by Sorrento CC’s U16 rider Fintan Ryan (pictured here in action recently).

It is a unique event on the track calendar in which the outright winner can come from any of the three separate sections of ability for which an Omnium is run.

Previous winners include Paul Healion, who also won the event when it was staged as a road race. World Track Masters Championship medallist Terry Mackin is also among the roll of previous winners, with his victory coming when the race in memory of former Finglas Ravens rider Duane Delaney became a track event.

This year’s format saw changes in the programme, with the introduction of the mile as one of the events in place of the Kilo Dash. The Omnium was also reduced to four events - Flying 200, Scratch Race, Mile Dash, and 500m TT.

The flying 200 saw some super times posted, including those by some of the younger riders like Fintan Ryan and those new to the track such Hugh Mulhearne (Carrick) and Eamonn Byrne (Garda).

The mile, which was run in heats, provided great entertainment with tactical and fast racing. It is an interesting distance as it’s just that bit too far for a full on sprint like the Kilo. So it becomes much more about a well-timed but sustained effort.

As the weather closed in, it was decided to just run those in contention from each of the sections in the Standing Start 500m TT. This proved to be a prudent decision as the rain came just as the event was wrapping up.

Overall winner Fintan Ryan posted a super fast 200 and went on to win all his events in the B section.

The participation this year of so many young riders was duly noted by former road pro Bernie McCormack from the host club. He decided to award a special prize for the most improved young rider, with that accolade going to the very promising Naoise Sheridan, an U16 rider from Orwell Wheelers CC.

It was a great days racing and, as always, the standard nudged higher again thanks to the experience continually being gained by riders in the Sundrive and Orangefield Track Leagues
