The Duane Delaney Memorial was to have had an extra dimension with the Irish derny-pace hour record having been scheduled during a break in racing.
The track meeting scheduled to take place in Dublin today, Saturday, has been cancelled and rescheduled for next Saturday.
The inclement weather forced the organisers to make the call this morning, when very breezy conditions and forecast rain gave them no real option.
The outdoor Sundrive Rd velodrome in south Dublin was set to play host to the annual Duane Delaney Memorial, held in memory of Dubliner and Finglas Ravens member Delaney who lost his life in a road traffic collision.
This year an extra flavour was to be brought to the proceedings, with multi national track champion John Lynch of the Kilcullen Murphy Surveys club set to tackle the derny paced hour record.
While the meeting being called off for today is a disappointment, it sounds as if the organisers had no option.
And the fact the racing has been rescheduled for next week means those who were planning to take part, and Lynch, will not have to wait too long before they are in action again.
The unique Duane Delaney event is run on a points system accrued over four events. Riders are split into groups based on ability, similar to the Sundrive League.
The events contested include the flying 200m TT, kilo dash, scratch race, standing start 500m TT. Points are awarded in each event for the top eight, from 8 to 1 point.
And while riders only race against those in the same category, the overall winner is the rider from any category who claims the most points, making the event unique.
