Tobias Foss, the current Tour de l'Avenir title holder, has crashed on his WorldTour debut with Jumbo Visma.
The 22-year-old from Norway came down and broke his collar bone on the second stage of Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana yesterday.
He now faces a period on the sidelines and surgery after the frustrating turn of events.
His team had already lost Tom Dumoulin from its intended line-up for the race as he fell ill and did not start the opening stage on Wednesday.
“What a
start to my pro career; a broken collarbone that needs a surgery is the case,”
Foss said on Twitter before adding it could have been worse.
He thanked the team for looking after him and promised he would be back in action soon.
Jumno-Visma had won the opening stage of the race with Dylan Groenewegen but the team did not feature yesterday when the stage finished atop a 2km climb overlooking Cullera.
Jumbo Visma sports director Grischa Niermann said despite Foss's youth the team had high hopes for him yesterday before his crash.
“We had hoped that he could have joined the battle on this kind of finish. This is very annoying for him and for the team," he said.
"But this is part of cycling as well. Until the crash, the stage went perfectly for us. We had Jos in the day’s breakaway and the teams had to chase very hard to reel them in.
"It was a strong and good attempt. Tomorrow we will be going full on for a sprint with Dylan again, but unfortunately without Tobias.”
