Police have launched an investigation after the Tour of Britain organiser Mick Bennett needed treatment from paramedics after a hit and run out on his bike.

A well known name in British, and indeed world, cycling, Mick Bennett has fallen victim to a hit and run while out training earlier today.

A car crashed into the back of Bennett while he was about five miles from his home in Surrey.

Rather than stop, the driver of the Nissan Micra left Bennett on the road injured and sped from the scene.

The Tour of Britain race director's bike was a write-off though local residents came to his assistance.

“The driver of a Nissan Micra smashed into the back of me whilst five minutes from home at approximately 1.30pm today,” he said.

While the driver left the scene at speed pursued by one of Bennett’s friends, the car was not seen again.

Injured, but not seriously

He was left with what he called “cuts and bruises” and a written off bike.

He said he was very thankful to those who had helped him and to the paramedics from Guildford station.

“If you spot a damaged Nissan Micra around the Guildford area please let me know,” he said.

“It could be been a lot worse. And never in my career have I been the subject of a hit and run on this scale.”
