A giant bike installed on a Devon hillside using cardboard and plastic to mark the visit of the Tour of Britain has been rearranged into a giant penis.

The structure was rearranged into by pranksters with residents in Ilfracombe waking up to the new, erm, erection yesterday morning.

Environmentalists arranged for the bike to be installed to highlight the damage caused to the environment by plastic.

The bike was visible on the side of Capstone Hill for the race’s visit on Monday’s stage 2. But once the event had passed through the area, pranksters got to work.

They took cardboard from the bike’s frame, handlebars and chain and rearranged into the obvious.

While locals woke up to it yesterday morning, it was quickly rearranged into a smiley face.

The Plastic Free North Devon group saw the funny said, according to organiser Seth Conway.

"Ilfracombe had a rude awakening this morning,” he said of the unusual handiwork.

"Some people obviously thought it would be fun to rearrange the spokes and the wheels.

"It's created quite a bit of a buzz and it's shone a bit more attention on to what the bike was there for."

Recycled plastic was also used to make the bike on the hill. Those behind it said they were looking to highlight their push for a plastic-free county.
