One of the most promising young riders in the country at
present, Kevin McCambridge has signed with French team AVC Aix En Provence for next
year.
McCambridge, like the vast majority of other Irish
riders, had a season this year that was decimated by the Covid-19 pandemic.
He signed with British Continental team Ribble Weldtite
Pro Cycling this time last year but with most of the season cancelled in the UK
and much of it scrapped in Ireland, he had limited opportunities.
However, the 19-year-old put in two fantastic performances at the National Road Championships, which underlined his progress this year despite the pandemic.

He recorded the second fastest time of the elite and U23 male riders in the TT and claimed silver in the U23 title race behind Ben Healy.
And in the road race he was on the attack with the pro
riders at the head of the race before eventually finishing in 6th place.
His new French Division 1 team is based in Provence-Alpes-Côte
d'Azur region of southern France.
“I’ll be
racing the top races in France such as Ronde
de l'Isard, Circuit Des Ardennes and some more good races,” McCambridge
told stickybottle.
“I’ll be
based in France for the majority of the
year and I have my first training camp in Girona in February which I’m looking forward too.”
It sounds like a
great move for McCambridge, especially as the Irish and British scenes may be
heavily impacted by Covid-19 next year, certainly in the early months of the
season.
He said while
2020 had been a very frustrating season, he felt he learned a lot about himself
and also progressed with his knowledge about training.
“My main
goal this year was for a top result at
Tour de l’Avenir and some more
big results on the Continent,” he said of his initial plans.
“I kept
training throughout the whole lock-down
situation and with the nationals
I finally had something to target.
“I hope
next year have some sort of normality so I could put my training into play and now with AVC Aix En
Provence I’ll have more races
that will suit me a lot better. I’m
super motivated.”
