A well-known Irish triathlete who has completed Ironman events has had his top-of-the-range bike stolen from his house in Skerries, north Co Dublin.
The theft took place at his home on Monday when thieves broke in through a rear window and made off with the bike estimated to be valued at €5,000.
The burglars appeared to have been on a robbing spree because, rather bizarrely, they left another stolen bike in the house.
The alarm was raised around 4.30pm last Monday when Marc Halligan’s wife called him at work to tell him they’d been broken into.
When he arrived home he learned his Specialized Shiv Expert bike was gone, a PlayStation 4 including five games and two control pads, an iPad and two Foy Vance concert tickets (he says that was a close escape for him - Ed).
Marc also discovered a bike that didn’t belong to him but when they reported the incident to the Gardaí they were able to match it to the owner who had also reported a stolen bike.

The owner of the bike, Marc Halligan, is a keen triathlete and bought the bike with the help of his late father-in-law who passed away in March.
Halligan posted the story on his own personal Facebook page and that has since been shared over 3,000 times and that has led to some promising leads.
Several people have since come forward saying they saw someone getting on the train heading towards the city –with a nice bike, around 4.30pm on Monday, while others have said they saw it at the top of Sheriff Street at 5pm that day.
The bike was bought two years ago with the help of Halligan’s late father-in-law Tony, himself an avid triathlete.
“It was my dream bike,” said the owner. “I never thought I’d be able to afford one but with Tony’s help I could.
“He was a huge triathlon fan having completed in the first ever triathlon race in Ireland held in Skerries in 1983.”
Halligan himself has competed in some major events and has a finishing time of 9:57 for Challenge Roth in 2014.
He’s also done Ironman Austria this year and last, going sub-10 hours both times.
“Unfortunately Tony passed away this March from lung cancer,” said Halligan, despondently. “The bike has huge sentimental value.”
