Top sports director Merijn Zeeman to leave Visma-Lease a Bike

Merijn Zeeman is regarded as the key management figure behind the success of Visma-Lease a Bike but is set to leave to take up a job in pro soccer

Merijn Zeeman is often credited as one of the key men behind the emergence of Visma-Lease a Bike as cycling's strongest team in recent years, but he is now leaving the Dutch World Tour squad.

Zeeman's talents are in demand elsewhere, in soccer to be precise. He will leave Visma-Lease a Bike at the end of the current season in favour of taking up a new job as director of football club AZ

The BNR radio channel in the Netherlands, which broke the news this evening, said when it contacted Zeeman for comment he did not want to respond.

"There is no way to respond to that now," he said of his reported move from Visma-Lease a Bike to the AZ club based in Alkmaar.

The club is also known as Alkmaar Zaanstreek. It plays in the Eredivisie, the top tier of pro soccer in the Netherlands.

More to come.
