Sagan who?

Paul O’Reilly (UCD-Fitzcycles.ie) shows some pretty neat bike-handling skills while on a recent training ride alongside Guinness Lake in Co Wicklow!

World champion Peter Sagan is one of the best riders in the peloton and his skill on the bike knows no bounds.

From bunny-hopping kerbs to last-ditch swerves to avoid crashes, he really is something to behold.

He learned his trade from a young age in his home country of Slovakia while riding mountain and cross bikes in the winter and he’s certainly reaping the benefits of it now.

But closer to home, we came across a man who could certainly challenge the Tinkoff man, at least when it comes to pulling wheelies.

He tells us this is essential training for the An Post Rás…

“They’re quite hard to do, especially the one-handed wheelie; you'd want to be comfortable with braking while the front wheel is in the air.

“I’ve fallen off many times acting the maggot.

“The worst was when I took a friend’s bike with the brakes the wrong way around; no need to explain what happened there!

“When I was 15 I used to wheelie for as long as I wanted on my mountain but on a road bike it isn't as easy.

“I find it shocking how little people can do with their bikes other than pedal it; wheelie-ing is the most basic thing to do as a kid.”
