Christmas week is a bit of a mixed bag for Irish riders, it seems.
Some are off work and using the time to stack up as many miles as possible – and Christmas Day is no exemption.
More, however, won’t even look at the bike and in the case of Keith Gater, it’s a day to refuel.
He’s a former national champion so we’re inclined to follow his lead on this one…
Ian Richardson – UCD CC’s man of the 2015 An Post Rás

“I'll do a long spin and make the most of the quiet roads.”
Pádraig Marrey (Western Lakes CC) - coach, rider, legend

“Working as a postman is great in that it has me up at the crack of dawn but it’s always particularly busy around this time.
“So when I took cycling seriously I was always out on the bike Christmas morning as we got very few days off at Christmas.
“But since we had Kyle, we give the bike a miss, put him in the buggy and go for run together with my partner Mary.”
Beth McLuskey (Unattached Leinster) – Coach, top rider

“I definitely won't be on the turbo, but I’ve always done a social run or MTB run early on Christmas morning.
“This year I'll probably go on the MTB to Djouce in the Wicklow mountains or Three-Rock in Dun Laoghaire.
“It'll be slow and fun and we'll always have a mince pie afterwards.
“Everyone is welcome!”
Aidan Crowley (Strata3-VeloRevolution) – Masters Champ

“With all the training diaries I’m reading, I was thinking I can play catch up so whilst all those riders are having the turkey and opening their belts on Christmas day.
“I’m going to do 300km and catch up on my December training...”
Daniel Stewart – Road pro with An Post Chainreaction

“Both! Just an hour on the bike followed by an eating session. I always do something training-wise on Christmas Day.”
Keith Gater (Waterford RC) - Former Irish vets’ champ

“Definitely turkey and a little chocolate - plenty of fuel for the days ahead.”
Conor Hennebry (Aquablue) – Irish U23 international

“There’s a spin in Carrick on Christmas Day, it’s only about 2 hours so I’ll go along there.
“It’s chilled out though, so it’s just for a chat, I usually go on this spin before the turkey.”
Sean Downey – Former An Post Chainreaction rider

“Always turkey, Christmas Day is a day where the bike doesn't need to be thought of.”
Cathal Moynihan (Tralee BC) – Olympian rower turned bikie

“Turkey all the way for me. I don't need to be told twice to have a day off these days.”
