With the deaths of two riders in pro races at the weekend – one after a crash and one after suffering a heart attack – the sport of pro cycling has endured a black few days.
Antoine Demoitié (25) of Wanty-Groupe Gobert died after he crashed in Gent Wevelgem and was hit by an official race moto while on the ground.
And Daan Myngheer (22) of Roubaix Lille Métropole died after suffering a heart attack on the opening stage of Criterium International in France on Saturday.
Some of Ireland’s top riders have taken to Twitter and Facebook to react to the tragic events.
Jack Wilson of An Post-Chainreaction took to Facebook to share the photo above, with Myngheer on his wheel during the junior road race at the World Road Championships in Geelong, Australia, in 2010.
The young Irish rider posted the following message: "Another sad day for Belgain cycling. I didn't know Daan but I raced along side him from 16 or 17 (years of age); picture is from the Junior World Champs in 2010. R.I.P Daan."
Here’s a round-up of just some of the other reactions from the Irish.
Horrible tragic news to wake up to. The cycling family has lost a brother. #RIPAntoine

Motos are a necessity in our sport for both security and media presence. It's their conduct and the direction that needs governance

Passing the peloton on downhills and during crucial moments in a race, when speed is high and fight for position frantic is just not safe

It's all trivial in comparison . Tell those whom you love that you do each day when you leave them and each moment that you can #RIPAntoine

The warning signs have been there for a long time. This was to high a price to be paid for people to realise the danger .. it is tragic
