International road and track rider Marc Potts is back on the Wattbike already and keeping his condition ticking over after a bad training crash.
The 26-year-old, who is trying to
quality for the Tokyo Olympics, broke his shoulder blade when hit by a driver
in a car.
As well as that main injury, he also
suffered soft tissue and abrasion injuries after the crash on Dromore Road near
Omagh.
Potts (26) said the driver who hit him
came straight at him and later said she hadn’t seen him because of the glare of
the sun.
"I was coming down the Dromore Road
at the 30mph zone when a car coming in the opposite direction turned in towards
a diner,” he said.
"The car was coming right at me,
she didn't see me but I saw it and swerved. She still hit the back of my bike.
"I cart wheeled over the bike and
landed on my back on the pavement. The woman stopped, she was very sorry and
said she didn't see me because of the sun.”

Marc Potts continued: "As well as
breaking my shoulder blade, I split my head open quite badly and actually
suffered a concussion so it was pretty bad, especially in the middle of my
training.
"I was able to swerve but I wonder
if this had happened to an older cyclist if the outcome might have been
different.
"We are coming into the summer
months and more and more people will be out on the roads.
“So I really would ask motorists to take
that extra few seconds and look around them to check if there are cyclists and
take care."
While Potts has focussed a lot of his
time on the track of late - riding for Ireland in the Worlds, Europeans and
World Cups – he also rides on the road.
The crash knocks his road race plans in
coming weeks and months. But he should have time to recover and get back into
shape before his next serious international track outings.
He was also wearing a helmet at the time
and though he suffered a cut to the head, he believed the helmet had saved him
from worse injury.
