
Having been involved with the Rás for decades and been race director for the last five editions, Tony Campbell's association with the race has ended. He has resigned as race director and has also resigned from the race 'organising club'.
Tony Campbell steps down as Rás director
Rás director Tony Campbell has stepped down after five years in the role. The move was not anticipated.
It means the race is now looking a new director and a new sponsor at the same time.
An Post has ended its financial backing of the race after eight years. The event is currently in talks were several parties about future sponsorship.
Campbell, a very popular figure on the Irish cycling scene, informed the race’s promoting club, Cumann Rás Tailteann, of his decision earlier this month.
He took over from Dermot Dignam after he stepped down as race director.
Dignam has remained on in the background with Cumann Rás Tailteann. He is chairman of the club and it was to Dignam that Campbell addressed and submitted his resignation.
However, while Dignam stayed on with the promoting club, stickybottle understands Campbell is opting not to.
He has stepped down as race director and he has also resigned from the club.
When contacted he said he was very grateful to all those who had helped him while he was director.
“I wish to thank each and every official with whom I have worked over the past five years for their dedication and commitment to the race,” he said.
“I would also like to thank all of the stage-end organisers, without whom the five editions of the Rás that I ran would not have been possible.”
His resignation had been confirmed earlier in the day in a brief press release issued by the Rás.
“Race organiser of An Post Rás/Rás Tailteann for the past five years Tony Campbell has resigned from the position,” it said.
“Citing ‘personal reasons’ Campbell informed Dermot Dignam, chairperson of the promoting club Cumann Rás Tailteann of his decision.
“Following the ending of An Post’s seven years sponsorship of the hugely popular 8 Day International Cycle Race Dignam confirmed that negotiations are taking place with a number of potential sponsors."
The process for filling the vacancy as race director was not immediately clear at the time of writing.
