Tom Pidcock claims he rode full 2021 season with knee injury causing pain

Tom Pidcock has said he suffered a knee injury, with pain, for the full 2021 season

One of the most exciting prospects in the cycling world at present, Tom Pidcock claims to have ridden the full 2021 season with a knee injury that caused him pain through the full year.

The young Ineos Grenadiers rider, who won Olympic MTB gold in Tokyo in July, has said today that he has now resolved the issue and is pain free for the first time since the start of the year.

Pidcock, who at times looked like the strongest rider in the peloton in some of the races he rode, has mentioned the knee issue before. However, his latest statement suggests the problem was worse than he previously said as it caused pain through the whole year.

"I’m back training and I can finally ride pain free in my knee, first time since February," he has now said.

"It’s amazing how much you can appreciate being healthy when you’ve had an injury for so long."

Last month he announced his withdrawal from three planned UCI World Cup cyclocross races in America so he could take the time to address the injury.

“We’ve decided to stop my season after the worlds to sort my knee out. I’ve a bit of tendonitis and it’s been niggling me all year," he said at that time.

"I am just going to get to (road) worlds and do the best I can there, call it a season and fix my knee problem, and get it back to 100 percent.”

Aside from his Olympic title this year, Pidcock (22) also won De Brabantse Pijl in what was his first season at WorldTour level.

He was also 2nd in Amstel Gold Race, 3rd in Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne, 5th in Strade Bianche and 6th in both La Flèche Wallonne and the Worlds while also completing his first Grand Tour at La Vuelta.
