Tom Pidcock breaks bone in crash, out of Tour de Suisse as Olympics nears

Tom Pidcock is recovering and will be out of race action for a while after his training crash 48 hours ago

Tom Pidcock has broken a collarbone in a training crash, with the incident coming as a blow to his preparations for the MTB race at the Olympic Games.

The British rider has also been forced out of the Tour de Suisse, which he had been due to ride with his Ineos Grenadiers team as be builds towards Tokyo.

“Tom Pidcock is recovering from injuries sustained on a
crash during a training ride in Andorra on Monday,” the team said in a
statement.

“Tom
suffered a broken collar bone and underwent surgery at a hospital in Girona
this morning. The injury means he will not be racing in the Tour de Suisse
which begins this weekend.” 

Pidcock’s coach within Ineos Grenadiers, Kurt Bogaerts, said the injury should not significantly derail the rider’s plans
going forward.

“Tom is doing well and is already looking ahead and focused on his rehabilitation,”
Bogaerts said.

“While
this means he won’t be able to start at the Tour de Suisse this week as
planned, he will get back to training as soon as possible and prepare for the
rest of the season.”
