We’ve received many messages from readers over the past six months or so about cycling lanes not being swept and generally maintained.
While segregated cycle lanes have sprung up in many places
during the pandemic, especially in Dublin, they can gather grit and debris that
becomes a hazard over time.
Some of our readers have reported this exact problem and
also questioned how the lanes could be cleaned as the wands, orcas and kerbs
that segregate the bike lanes from traffic mean conventional road sweepers can’t
be used.
Well, fear not, help is at hand. Dublin City Council has
shared this video of a mini road sweeper small enough to squeeze into the new
segregated cycle lanes.
These mini vehicles are not new. We’ve seen them around Dublin for quite some time but this is the first time we’ve seen them cleaning cycle lanes.
So if you notice any new lanes that need sweeping, be sure to get onto the council or onto your local councillor and request one of these sweepers is deployed.
