Three cycling figures to contest Olympic Council of Ireland elections

It is now emerged that three well known cycling figures are going forward for the Olympic Council of Ireland elections, and not just former Cycling Ireland president PJ Nolan.

Three people well known in the Irish cycling community are contesting the upcoming Olympic Council of Ireland elections.

Cycling Ireland already revealed earlier this month that its former president PJ Nolan, a popular figure from Co Meath's Navan Road Club, was being nominated by it to run in the elections.

And while he is the only candidate nominated by the cycling’s governing body, Denis Toomey and Billy Kennedy are also going forward to contest the election.

Toomey was Cycling Ireland president until the incumbent Ciaran McKenna took over a just over a year ago.

His specialist area when president of Cycling Ireland was paracycling and since departing the cycling federation worked as Chef de Mission of the Irish team at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio.

And it is Paralympics Ireland that has nominated Toomey to run for a place on the Olympic Council of Ireland's executive committee; the same category Nolan will be contesting.

There are a total of seven executive committee posts to be filled, with 18 candidates in the race.

The third candidate from the Irish cycling community, Kennedy already has a lot of experience of the Olympic Council's work as he has been a long-serving executive committee member.

He is now running for the position of honorary treasurer, with Nicky Jermyn from Badminton Ireland his only rival for that post.

Kennedy has been nominated to run by three national federations; Archery Ireland, the Irish Ice Hockey Association and the Irish Amateur Wrestling Association.

Like Toomey and Nolan, Kennedy is also a former president of Cycling Ireland.

He managed the Olympic cycling team at the 1988 Games and following the 1992 Games he was elected into a post with the Olympic Council of Ireland and has held that position ever since.

Kennedy, a former international rider from Carrick-on-Suir, was nominated for the elections in 2014 by Cycling Ireland.

The election of the OCI executive committee will take place at a general meeting on February 9th.

The positions to be filled include: president, 1st vice president, 2nd vice president, honorary general secretary, honorary treasurer and seven executive members posts.
