This video and these photos make a hugely strong argument for always wearing a helmet

It was one of the lingering images from an absolutely bruising Dwars door Vlaanderen in Belgium Wednesday; Marcel Aregger (IAM Cycling) lying prone on the deck after a very heavy fall.

The young Swiss rider was knocked unconscious in a high-speed crash and the footage of him below looked less than encouraging.

It was so bad, in fact, that his teammates Dries Devenyns and Aleksjs Saramotins abandoned immediately in shock while a rider from the Katusha team also withdrew.

The latter had been catapulted into a drain on the right-hand side of the road and was covered in mud from his waist upwards.

IAM Cycling directeur sportif Eddy Seigneur admitted the incident reminded him of the crash that killed Fabio Casartelli on the descent of the Col de Portet d’Aspet at the 1995 Tour de France.

“Images of Fabio Casartelli flashed through my mind,” Seigneur said.

“Marcel was lying face down on the pavement without giving any signs of life. Emergency medical rescuers attended him with all precautions.

"His face was very bloodied due to the injury to his eyebrow, but then he gave encouraging signs. He managed to move all his limbs.”

Aregger sustained a broken collarbone and a head injury in the incident, which also forced his teammate Jerome Pineau out of the race.
