A nasty looking fall off a wheelie bin couldn't derail the efforts of these idiots as they stole a locked bike from a street in Dublin's north inner city. They lifted the bike over the top of the post it was secured to, rendering the lock useless.
The bike - which appears to be a Fido electric model - was locked to the post via the frame only, rather than the wheels. It meant the man who stole it was able to ride away as those in the car shooting the video looked on.
The incident, which happened off Liffey St, demonstrates the brazen efforts these opportunists will go to, even in public places. And it also shows that anyone locking a bike to a street post needs to be sure it can't be manoeuvred like this and so easily stolen.
Dublin has had a significant problem with bike thefts for years and no area of the city is safe. The problem has worsened over the last decade as more expensive bikes have been in circulation, becoming easy pickings.
Recently we reported on a case of a bike being stolen by a man armed with a cordless angle grinder, which made light work of the lock used to secure the bike in place. He even had an accomplice acting as look-out, circling on an e-scooter as he got to work cutting the lock.
In this latest incident, again there are two men involved, making it harder for anyone to intervene - especially on their own - for fear of being attacked.
Our advice, for what it's worth, is to simply never lock your bike on a public street - especially in Dublin. Wherever you plan to take your bike in the city, find out where the nearest bike shop is and ask the staff if you can leave your bike with them. There are also more car parks in central Dublin providing parking spaces for bikes, and some of them are even free.
