Thibau Nys, the 21-year-old Belgian rider who has had a storming first half of the season, has said he is glad he does not have to make his living as a sprinter given some of behaviour of those who contest the bunch gallops.
The Lidl Trek rider, whose father is cyclocross legend Sven Nys, also said he is a much better rider on the road than his father ever was.
"My dad realises that I do things he never did; because he didn't get the chance or because he didn't have the capabilities for it," Nys told Het Nieuwsblad.
"I think you can say that I'm much better on the road than Dad ever was. There is no discussion about that. I will never – or probably never – match my dad's record in cyclocross."
Nys added while some observers commented he had the legs of the top sprinters on the road, he did not feel he had the head for top tier pro road race sprinting.
“Sprinters are assholes," he said. "I don't want to be associated with it. What happens in a sprint is sometimes criminal. Literally criminal.
"And I'm not talking about that sandwich in Romandie, because that wasn't too bad. In Hungary I experienced more serious situations.
"In the first stage, zoom in on the helicopter view (below) of the last one and a half kilometers and you can throw five or six men in jail. Really and truly. At 65-70km an hour you see riders pushing others away with their hands.
"It is certainly not just Dylan Groenewegen, but I also saw him perform a tour in stage two. Sam Welsford broke his wheel against the kerb. Then you will know. Every time I participate in a bunch sprint it is an interesting learning experience, but really, I am glad that I don't have to earn my living from it.”
