Matt Teggart (WiV SunGod) has won the Cycling Ireland National Road Series 2022 after a dominant display. He claimed overall victory, after the fifth and final round in Dromore, Co Down, on Sunday with a final points tally of 190.

Teggart won the opening three rounds of the series - the Des Hanlon Memorial, Darrach McCarthy Road Race, Meath Grand Prix - and was 2nd in the final round at the weekend.

Those results saw him take the overall victory in the series from Luke Smith (Moynalty CC) and Gareth O'Neill (Caldwell Cycles). Smith was one of only two riders to score points in all five rounds - along with Conor Murnane of UCD CC - with his best result coming in the Meath GP, where he finished in 2nd place to Teggart.

O'Neill rounded out the final podium with 92 points. He scored points in four of the five rounds, including a best finish of 3rd on the Darrach McCarthy Road Race, the second round in the series.

Aaron Wade (Team U Cube 17) won the final round of the series on Sunday, after escaping with Teggart from the main breakaway and getting the jump on him just before the finish. Wade was injured for a chunk of the season, and was also based in France for much of the time he was racing.

However, he still finished 6th overall in the series as he gained 80 points for his win last Sunday, which was double the usual 40 points on offer for a victory in the series. Double points are awarded for the final round in the series in a bid to maintain interest in the racing as the season nears an end.

"It's been a class season, I'm really pleased to win three out of the four (rounds in the series) and then get 2nd," Teggart said of his three victories and runner-up spot in the four rounds of the five-race series that he rode this year.

"I'm delighted. I showed a lot of consistency and I'm really pleased with that," he said, adding last Sunday's race - on an undulating circuit - was a very tough and aggressive contest.

Teggart goes back to Belgium this week for a racing stint there with his trade team and is also hopeful of being selected by the team for the Tour of Britain. He was selected this season to ride the elite road race at the European Championships for Ireland and the Commonwealth Games road race, where he finished 4th riding for Northern Ireland.
