Another teenage cyclist has been seriously injured in what is the fourth crash in less than a week involving young cyclists and drivers. The latest crash has occurred in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford.
It follows a cyclist aged 19 years suffering serious head injuries during a collision with a truck driver in Co Galway last Monday at about 5.30pm. Within hours, a 19-year-old woman was seriously injured in a crash with a taxi driver in Cork while she was cycling in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
And on Thursday a teenage girl was airlifted from the scene in Dungarvan, Co Waterford, when she was injured in a crash with a driver in a car. There are no links between any of the incidents, though they occur as the number of drivers in vehicles on the roads of the Republic are still returning to pre-pandemic levels.
In a statement about the latest crash, gardaí said members of the force attended the scene of "a serious road traffic collision" in the townland of Gorteen, Templeshambo, Enniscorthy, at approximately 15.50pm yesterday, Saturday.
"The collision involved a male teen pedal cyclist and a male driver of a van," the statement added. "The male teen was removed from the scene to Wexford General Hospital. The driver of the van (early 40s) was treated at the scene for shock.
"The teen cyclist remains in hospital where his condition is now described as serious but stable. The road had been closed but has since reopened."
