Teenage cyclist undergoes head surgery after attack by man in passing car

Gardai are still appealing for witnesses to an attack that happen last month and which left a young teenage seriously injured after he was attacked while cycling near his home

A young teenager who was attacked out cycling near his home has had to undergo surgery his injuries were so serious.

The 13-year-old was cycling in Co Limerick on Monday, June 22nd, when he was targeted by a man who got out of a car that stopped on the road after passing the boy.

Gardai are continuing to investigate the serious assault and have appealed for anyone with information, or who may have been in the area at the time, to come forward.

“A 13-year-old boy was cycling his bicycle on Ard na mBothair, Galbally. A small white car stopped and a male youth got out and struck the boy in the face, knocking him off his bike,” said Sgt Ber Leetch from Henry St Garda station in Limerick City.

“This happened at 8.30pm in the evening so it was still bright. The young boy sustained a serious head injury and had to be transferred to Temple Street Children’s Hospital in Dublin.

“The investigation is at an advanced stage and gardai in Bruff are looking for any witnesses to this serious assault to please contact them on 061-382940 or at any garda station,” Sgt Leetch said.

Gardai added the suspect in the case was aged about 20 years old and hit the boy in the head after stopping his car and getting out of the vehicle.

The young teenager was knocked of his bike as a result of
being struck and the fall from his bike he sustained a serious head injury that
required a plate to be inserted into his head.

Gardai believe
the boy may have been deliberately singled out by a man who is known to the
gardai in the area.

While the
incident occurred over two weeks ago the gardai inquiry into the serious
assault is continuing and the guards investigating the case are still appealing
for information from the public.
