The death of 18-year old Stefan Cooper on Tuesday night was the first case of a cyclist being killed on the roads of the Republic since the start of the year.
The young Corkman who was tragically killed while out riding his bike on Tuesday evening has been named as Stefan Cooper.
The 18-year-old was struck by a car at Barley Hill, on the Clonakilty to Skibbereen Road (N71), just west of Rosscarbery at around 7pm and was fatally injured.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem examination was later carried out.
The driver of the car, a man in his late 60s, was uninjured, though was said to be deeply traumatised by the incident.
The road was closed for a number of hours to facilitate a forensic collision examination and local diversions were put in place.
The route re-opened yesterday afternoon.
Cooper, from Tragumna in Skibbereen, had one sister and one brother. He is also survived by his father Christy, though mother Helen died a number of years ago.
Mayor of County Cork, Cllr John Paul O’Shea, said it was a dreadful tragedy for the teenager’s family and for West Cork as a community.
“The loss of any young person in such tragic circumstances is such a sad occasion for the community in west Cork.
“I want to extend my deepest sympathies to the young person’s family, friends and to the wider community.
“It is in times like these that we see how important our family and friends are.”
