Cyclist dies after Kildare crash: A cyclist has died after being injured in a crash with a car driven by a 40-year-old woman.

A teenage cyclist has died from head injuries he sustained in Kildare in a crash with a vehicle midweek.

The 16-year-old had been transferred to Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, after the incident.

However, despite receiving specialist care for his injuries in Dublin he has sadly died. His death was confirmed by the Garda on Saturday afternoon.

The fatality brings to seven the number of cyclists killed on the roads of the Republic since the start of the year.

Gardai said the crash in which the boy was fatally injured occurred last Tuesday at Oughterard near Straffan just before 5pm.

“A 16 year old boy has died in hospital today following a traffic collision in Co. Kildare on the 3rd July 2018,” a Garda statement said,

“The boy was cycling at Oughterard, Straffan, at 4.50pm on the 3rd July, when he was involved in a collision with a car.

“He was taken to Beaumont Hospital where he was treated for head injuries and was pronounced dead earlier today.

“The driver of the car, a woman in her 40s, was not injured. A Garda investigation into the collision is underway.”
