Teenage cyclist airlifted after third serious cycling-driver crash in 4 days

Gardaí are investigating the third crash this week in which teenage cyclists were injured in collisions also involving drivers

A teenage girl has become the third young cyclist seriously injured this week in crashes with drivers. The victim of the latest crash was airlifted from the scene in Dungarvan, Co Waterford.

That crash followed a cyclist aged 19 years suffering serious head injuries during a collision with a truck driver in Co Galway on Monday at about 5.30pm. Within hours, a 19-year-old woman was seriously injured in a crash with a taxi driver in Cork while she was cycling in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The latest crash, in Dungarvan, occurred on Thursday afternoon on Clonea Road. “At approximately 4pm gardaí were alerted to a road traffic collision involving a car and a pedal cyclist,” a statement from the Garda said.

“The pedal cyclist, a girl in her teens, was taken to Cork University Hospital by helicopter and remains in a critical condition. The female driver (late 30s) of the car was treated at the scene for shock.

“The road was closed to allow for a technical examination to be conducted by Forensic Collision Investigators. This has since concluded and the road has reopened.”

Gardaí in Dungarvan are appealing for any witnesses who were in the Clonea Road area on Thursday afternoon and who may have footage - including dash cam - to make it available to them by calling (058) 48600.
