Martijn Tusveld's Scott Foil RC bike snapped in two places in the late crash on stage 2 of Giro d'Italia

Martijn Tusveld (Team DSM) had the misfortunate of glancing behind him at the precise movement a ripple spread through the peloton reaching him near the finish on stage 2 of Giro d'Italia today.

The Dutchman was the first cyclist to hit the deck, with others following, after shove - apparently by Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) into Davide Ballerini (Soudal-QuickStep) caused the incident.

However, while Tusveld's fall looking especially nasty, he was able to remount and finish the stage. He appears to have escaped without serious injury, though his Scott Foil RC was snapped in two places after the crash into the crowd control barriers.

A video from the team - shot by the mechanic who ran up through the cavalcade with a new bike for the stricken rider - shows top tube and the down tube snapped completely in two, with only cables linking the two sections of the broken bike.

Unusually, Team DSM released the video shot by the mechanic themselves and circulated it on social media, even though their bike sponsor my not be happy about seeing its product broken in two on one of the biggest races in the world. It also confirmed Tusveld had been medically checked and was able to continue in the race.

"Scans have thankfully revealed no broken bones," Team DSM said. "However, he does have multiple contusions and today is another big impact on top of his crash from before his travel to Italy. We hope for a good night of recovery before tomorrow's stage."
