Team DSM, which counts Irish rider Nicolas Roche among its ranks, has named its team for La Vuelta next month, with Romain Bardet and Jai Hindley set to lead the squad in the Spanish Grand Tour.

Unfortunately
Roche has not been named in the eight-man team, though he has always ridden
very well in the race.

He has won two
Vuelta stages during his career – in 2013 and 2015 - and has also held the race
leader’s jersey twice, in 2013 and 2019.

While his absence this year is disappointing for him, and for Irish cycling fans, the team has flagged some doubts about Hindley’s participation in La Vuelta. That raises the prospect that a slot on the team may become free in coming weeks.

Jai Hindley was 2nd overall at last year's Giro. However, he abandoned this year's edition and has not raced since then. It means a final call still must be made on whether he will start La Vuelta next month (Photo: Marco Alpozzi)

For now, Hindley
is named in the team alongside Bardet. They are joined by Thymen Arensman, Alberto
Dainese, Nico Denz, Chad Haga, Michael Storer and Martijn Tusveld.

“The team
have gelled really well together at altitude camp with some good workshops, as
we ironed out and pre-discussed our
tactical plans for the race,” said
Team DSM coach Matt Winston.

“We’ll
take an offensive approach with the team, first focusing on stages and seeing
where that brings us. Jai is
still recovering from his injury sustained at the Giro d’Italia.

“There have been some ups and downs in the last period
for him, so we will make the final call on whether he will take the start after as the race draws closer.”

Australian
Hindley, who was 2nd in last year’s Giro, abandoned this year’s Italian Grand
Tour, before the start of stage 14, and he has not raced since then.
