How he normally looks; but yesterday one of Ireland's top riders Mark Dowling had a very embarrassing racing moment, captured in the photos below (Photo by Brendan Slattery at the recent Rás Mumhan)
One of the best riders in the country for a number of years, Mark Dowling thought he’d taken his second win of the season yesterday at the Waller Cup in Bohermeen, Co Meath.
Having won the savage Des Hanlon Memorial last month with a fantastic solo attack in Carlow, Dowling sailed over the finish line yesterday with his arms aloft in victory again.
But there was one slight problem; Martyn Irvine had done the same thing a few minutes earlier to win the race.
It meant Dowling (DID Dunboyne) was sprinting for 2nd, from a chase group, rather than for the win.
With a number of riders going clear and being recaptured, Dowling simply didn’t realise Irvine (Madison Genesis) was still away when he gave the chasing group the slip in the closing stages in what he thought was a winning move.
He saw the funny side of it though, posting on Facebook: “I'd hate to be that guy who celebrates a win not knowing someone is up ahead ... Oh wait!!”
These Sean Rowe photos capture the moment perfectly.
