Muriel Furrer, the young Swiss rider airlifted to hospital after sustaining head injuries in a heavy crash in the junior women's road race at the Worlds, has very sadly died from her injuries.
The Swiss teenager had been airlifted to hospital from the crash scene yesterday - at her home Worlds - and there were serious concerns for her as she had sustained very serious head injuries.
However, the championship organisers and the UCI this morning said they had consulted with the Furrer family and they wanted the racing programme at the Worlds to continue to its conclusion on Sunday.
Swiss Cycling said in a statement this afternoon: "Our hearts are broken, we have no words. It is with a heavy heart and infinite sadness that we have to say goodbye to Muriel Furrer today.
"We are losing a warm-hearted and wonderful young woman who always had a smile on her face. There is no understanding, only pain and sadness.
"Our thoughts are with her loved ones and family. We ask that you respect her privacy at this incredibly difficult time."
More to come.
