The UCI has announced that no pro races, or any UCI-ranked event, will take place until at least June 1st.
That represents an extension of at least one month as
racing had previously been suspended until at least the end of April.
The move, which was announced today, comes as surprise
given the extent of the Covid19 crisis globally, with parts of Continental
Europe worst hit.
Today the UCI held a meeting with representatives of
teams, race organisers and riders where the extension to the suspension of competition
was agreed.
The UCI added when it came to rescheduling postponed
races the Grand Tours and monuments would be given priority. Furthermore, the
season may be extended.
“Fully aware of the consequences of the current crisis on
the professional peloton, the UCI and cycling’s families also approved the
creation of a working group… which will come up with concrete initiatives
concerning notably the riders’ contracts and the situation of the teams in the
context of the current inactivity linked to the pandemic,” the UCI said.
“To date, the UCI has received more than 450 requests for
the postponement or cancellation of events, of which a large majority concern
road cycling.
“In this extremely difficult context, the UCI – as
cycling’s world body – will continue its consultations with the different
families to find the best solutions for our sport.
“In this period of widespread incertitude, which is
weakening the financial situation of all involved, the UCI again calls on
everyone to be united, responsible and strong.”
