The Supercross Cup two-man battle between Seymour and Aiken is nicely poised
The penultimate round of the Stevens Supercross Cup brings the riders to the challenging course in north Dublin’s St Anne’s Park this weekend, with the two heavyweights of the discipline set for a rematch.
Roger Aiken (Banbridge CC) may have gotten the better of the old master Robin Seymour (Team WORC) in the third round of the series a fortnight ago in Corkagh Park, but Seymour still maintains a clear lead in the overall standings.
The Olympian and multi national champion won the first two rounds of the series, before being beaten by Aiken last time out.
And while Aiken has bagged a victory and second place in two of the three rounds thus far, his DNF in round two means he is well behind Seymour in the overall standings.
Seymour now has 260 points at the top of the leader board, with second placed Evan Ryan (Team WORC) on 215 and third placed rider Peter McConville (Newry Wheelers) on 200.
Aiken’s DNF has cost him dearly, leaving him in lowly 6th place on 170 points. However, there are two rounds remaining and every rider is allowed to exclude one race from the final overall points tally.
That means if Aiken were to win tomorrow, Saturday, in St Anne’s and again in the last round in Tymon Park in a fortnight, he would take the series from Seymour.
However, if there’s one thing Seymour has developed down the year’s it’s the ability to keep bagging victories. Aiken will have his work cut out for him in trying to take the overall series.
A win by him tomorrow though would really bring some excitement to a winner-takes-all final round on December 3rd.
But before then the riders have the small matter of a testing course in St Anne’s Park in Raheny to contend with tomorrow.
The venue is known for its hard ground, tunnel pinch points and the longest set of steps the Supercross Cup organisers could find.
This year’s course has changed somewhat, with the addition of a cross over, a more compact circuit and twice as many corners as before, but with no reduction in speed around the lap.
Fast racing is expected which will likely suit the road men just as much as the off road experts, a factor that may well play into Aiken’s hands.
Recent works in St Anne’s Park have also opened up a new sector by the lake near the seafront and this features on Saturday.
It’s a compact lap that should be very appealing to spectators. With the excellent Red Stables market in the park to check out after the race, this is well and truly one for the family.
As well as the A race, there will also be a B event for those who want a slightly less hectic outing. As with the first three rounds, juniors and U16s can rider the B race.
The sign on will be hosted once again in the Red Stables (www.theredstables.ie) complex off Mount Prospect Avenue.
The main parking area is located there, with a secondary parking area beside the Bull Island Causeway.
