Cycling Ireland has named a strong selection of U14 and U16 riders for upcoming racing and training engagements at home and abroad. The selection is part of the FBD Ireland Talent Team 2020 concept.
A four-rider team has been named for the upcoming Errigal Youth Tour over the August Bank Holiday Weekend. Those riders are: Mark Downey and Matthew Teggart (both Banbridge CC), Shane O’Hara (Limerick CC) and Aaron Swan (TCR Racing).
That team will be managed by Neil Teggart, with Joe Hahessy as assistant manager.
Those four riders will then be joined by four more for a racing and training trip to Holland in August. The four to be added to the team include: Declan Mulholland (Clann Eireann), Michael O’Loughlin (Iverk Produce-Carrick Wheelers), Dion McCarthy (Fermoy CC) and Adam Thatcher (Slaney CC).
The eight-rider line-up will travel to Holland for a week in mid-August for a training and racing camp. They will be hosted in Holland by local families.
The U14s will ride single day races in Holland and Belgium during the period. The U16s will train in Holland before and after riding the Vattenfall Cyclassics stage race in Hamburg from August 16th to 18th.
The trip will then conclude with a training day in a velodrome in Germany. Cycling Ireland development coaches Martin O' Loughlin and Frank O' Leary will accompany the FBD Ireland Talent Team 2020 at the camp.
Meanwhile, Cycling Ireland has said some 21 applications were received when the FBD Ireland TT2020 was advertised recently. In total, 86 applications have been received following the first two invitations for applications.
The results and performances of all applicants are being monitored by Cycling Ireland. The existing squad will be expanded after the All-Ireland Youth Championships in Limerick. As was the case with the 2011 applications, Cycling Ireland said it will positively discriminate in favour of those riders born in 1996, who will then join the Junior Development Programme once they complete our winter programme.
The first meeting of the expanded FBD Ireland TT2020 will take place in October.
Best of luck to the eight riders picked for the home and foreign fixtures and to all of those who applied for the squad recently.
