Stretch of greenway to be raised to maximise cyclists' view of sea

Some of the Waterford to Rosslare greenway will be raised so cyclists can get a better view of the sea as they ride on the greenway route

A stretch of the Rosslare to Waterford greenway is to be
raised in order to give cyclists a better view of the coastline in Co Wexford.

In December Cathaoirleach of Rosslare Municipal District,
Cllr Ger Carthy, said because some of the greenway close to Rosslare had a
railway line running alongside it, the view of the coast from the greenway
would be lost.

He said as cyclists and walkers used the greenway, their
view of the sea would be obscured by the railway line running alongside as the
railway tracks were five to six feet higher than the greenway.

At the time he suggested that stretch of the greenway
should run along the other side of the railway line, closer to the coast and
with an uninterrupted and clear view of the coast.

However, while relocating the greenway to the coast side
of the railway track could not be achieved, it has now been decided the
greenway will be raised.

That means it will be high enough for people on it to see
over the railway line and out to sea.

“I had a meeting with the director and he assures me he
can raise the ground, to maximise the views, not on the coastal side. That will
be a win-win for everyone,” Cllr Carthy said of director with responsibility
for special projects Eddie Taffe

Cllr Carthy added the agreed compromise was essential
because the greenway had to be the best facility possible, with the most
spectacular views possible, if it was to be successful.

“I’m not in favour of developing something that is not
going to be at its full potential. I think it would be a missed opportunity to
miss out on the wonderful views of the coastline and the harbour,” he said.

“So let’s get it right the first time. We’re going to
have it for a lifetime so let’s do it right.”

The new greenway will be 57.5km in length and is intended
to create a major amenity that will draw domestic and foreign visitors to the
area.

In conjunction with the proposed Southeast Greenway, from New Ross to Waterford, the new Rosslare to Waterford greenway will be part of 82km of dedicated walking and cycling facilities
in the south east.
