Gardai have found a number of bikes in the back of a van at a checkpoint that they believe were stolen, including during burglaries.

The bikes - six in total - were seized after a van was searched on the M1 in north Dublin.

Other property, including computers and tablets, were found in the same vehicle and gardai suspect they had also been stolen.

"One man, mid 30s, was arrested following a search of a van by Gardaí on the M1 motorway," the gardai said in a press release following the operation.

"The van was observed stopped in the hard shoulder, north of a multi agency checkpoint. Five bicycles and thirteen laptops, believed to be stolen property, were discovered in the van.

The van was stolen during a series of checkpoints involving the Garda and a number of other enforcement agencies including the Revenue Commissioners and National Transport Authority.

As well as the man driving the van being arrested and the property seized from him, the five-hour checkpoint resulted in a number of other actions by the authorities, including:

  • A total of 11 people were arrested; nine for drink driving and one for a public order offence.
  • Gardaí seized 12 vehicles for road traffic offences, with fixed charge penalties are to be issued.
  • In total 214 drivers were breath tested and over 40 vehicles searched.
  • Four marked gas oil detections were made and 176 taxi licence holders were checked by compliance.
  • One person was detected operating without a valid small public service vehicle driver licence.

The operation was centred on the M1 motorway at junction 6, north and south-bound and connecting road networks, between the hours of 2am and 7am on Sunday, February 19th. Six planned checkpoints were carried out.
