Stephen Roche was on hand at the end of the men's road race at the UCI World Road Championships in Zürich today, when Tadej Pogačar became only the third rider in history to win the Worlds, Tour de France and Giro d'Italia in one season.
The last rider to take the triple crown was, of course, Dubliner Roche, during his incredible 1987 season when gold in Villach at the Worlds was added to his Tour and Giro general classification wins earlier that year.
Back then - all of 37 years ago - Roche was only the second rider in history to win the big three in the same year, after Eddy Merckx in 1974.
Roche was at the finish of the race today in Zürich, having his photo taken with Pogačar, just after he was presented with his gold medal and pulled on the famous rainbow bands for the first time.
"Great to meet and welcome Tadej into the triple crown club, winners of the Giro, Tour and World championships in the same year," said Roche on Instagram, also sharing a photo of himself with Pogačar.
