Irish cycling legend Stephen Roche is to open the Irish Cycling Show at Dublin’s RDS in May and will be the guest of honour throughout the two-day event.
A special stand is being put in place for the former world champion, Giro and Tour de France winner at which some of his old jerseys, bikes and other memorabilia will be on show.
Among the exhibits will be the Battaglin bike on which he won the 1987 world title in Villach, Austria. There will also be on show various items of clothing and trophies from a career that spanned thirteen years at the very top level of cycling.
Roche said he was delighted to be associated with the event, adding the staging of such a large-scale cycling expo for the first time in Ireland reflected a booming sport here.
“I’m really excited to be appearing at the Irish Cycling Show,” he said.
“It’s high time there was an exhibition of this kind in Ireland and it’ll be great to be able to remember 1987 in the company of friends.”
Securing Roche’s signature is a major coup for the show’s organisers Mara Media.
Chief executive of the Donegal-based company, Hugh Bonner said Roche was exactly the kind of figure he originally had in mind to open the show and to be at the event to meet fans of all ages.
“There’s no doubt he’ll be somebody that everyone will want to see and have a chat to, and being able to have a good close look at the memorabilia will also be very interesting for people,” he told stickybottle.
“Stephen Roche’s achievements in 1987 represented the beginning of a new era of success for Irish people at home and abroad. His open-top bus homecoming in Dublin came a year before the Irish soccer team’s similar return following Euro ’88.”
The Irish Cycling Show will feature exhibitors from every facet of cycling and related industries including cycle retailers and distributors. There will also be an emphasis on attractions to entertain the whole family.
Plans in the pipeline include a test track around the venue, demonstrations, shows and seminars throughout the weekend.
We’ll keep you posted on future developments with the show, which runs on May 19th and 20th.
