Lydia Boylan has finished 16th overall in the omnium event at the European Championships in Grenchen, Switzerland.

The reigning national road race champion had three remaining events in the discipline to complete today, those being the 500m TT, the flying lap and the points race.

In the 500m TT she was 9th in a very solid time of 36.628, just over a second slower than the fastest woman.

However, that time was a new national record, beating the record she set at the Derby Revolution last month.

In the flying lap she clocked 14.589 and that saw her finish 8th, around half a second slower than winner Laura Trott of Team GB but she did move up two places overall to 14th.

In the final event, the points race, she was ultra-aggressive and though taking a few points along the 100-lap test, she would drop back to 16th overall after finishing 15th.

Josie Knight and Mel Spath went in the women’s Individual Pursuit and the latter rode exceptionally well, clocking a blistering time of 3.40.698.

That was good enough for seventh place and just over three seconds outside a chance to ride for a medal.

Knight was 20th in a time of 3.47.228.

In the keirin, Shannon McCurley was Ireland’s sole competitor and she went in Heat 2 but could only managed 5th, 0.399 seconds outside the winning time of Elis Ligtlee of the Netherlands.

She advanced to the first round repechage where again she finished 5th, this time 0.255 seconds outside the winner Anastasia Voinova of Russia.

Only the first three qualified for the second round so this ended McCurley’s participation.

Lauren Creamer was the only other Irish rider in action and she went in the elimination race.

There, she was the second rider out, and that brought an end to this campaign for the Irish team.

Next up for them is the opening round of the UCI World Cup in Cali at the end of the month.
