Hutchinson, from Northern Ireland, makes his Ireland debut today after declaring for Ireland last year.
National Time Trial (TT) Champion, Michael Hutchinson is Ireland’s only rider in action at the World Championships in Valkenburg today, Wednesday.
David McCann was also selected for the elite time trial (TT), but he was forced out after a training accident in recent weeks during which he sustained bruising to his ribs, shoulder and wrist that forced him off the bike for a prolonged period.
Hutchinson rolls off the starter’s ramp at 12.44pm Irish time and is seventh man off. The riders are starting at two minute intervals, with the Irishman chasing Korean rider Jiyong Kang.
The 45.7km test starts in Heerlen with the riders heading to Simpelveld for the first of the day’s climbs, Sint Remigiusstraat. They then turn west to Gulpen and Martgraten before tackling the two climbs of the Bundersberg and the Cauberg just before the finish in Valkenburg.
Some of the riders, including Alberto Contador, have said the first two climbs are not very difficult, a factor which may favour Hutchinson who rides best on flatter TT courses.
He has been in very good form in recent weeks, breaking his own 10 and 25 mile personal bests in Britain where he lives. He set times of 17:45 and 45:46 in those events respectively.
