The scene is firmly set for a fantastic weekend’s racing at the Tour of the North over Easter with the publication of the start list for the 2016 event.
A field of 110 riders from across Ireland as well as England, Scotland, Wales and Holland will battle it out over five stages to decide who takes the title won by the flying David Watson of North Down CC 12 months ago.
The racing gets underway on Good Friday, March 25th, with a short sharp lung bursting effort around Kirkistown Motor Racing Circuit in Newtownards which will see stage honours and the first yellow jersey settled over one hour plus 5 laps.
The following day the riders face the 92-mile stage 2 starting and finishing in Portaferry and taking in Windmill Hill three times.
Easter Sunday sees a split stage; the field tackling a 5 mile TT from 9am which finishes on the Mountain Road climb.
And in the afternoon there are 66 miles on the menu, with the action unfolding from Portaferry to Newtownards, into the Castlereagh Hills and then to Donaghadee for the finish.
The final general classification will then be settled with the concluding stage 5 on Easter Monday over 78 miles.
Starting at Bangor Rugby Club, the racing heads for Comber and takes in four laps of a hilly circuit in the Killinchy area before finishing with a tough climb up Bradshaw's Brae and the Holywood Road towards Craigantlet.
We’ll bring you more comprehensive preview pieces a little closer to the event.
However, the organisers have stressed that some teams entered must clarify their starting line-ups before the event.
Race director Joan McCullough has requested that those teams who need to replace their junior rider contact her via email by tomorrow night, Thursday March 10th, with the name and details.
“There are 117 riders on the start list, the PSNI let 110 ride,” she added.
“By the start date of the race there are usually some people who drop out for various reasons. Only riders from the bottom of the list will be used as substitutes.”
The woman at the helm of the event, McCullough said she believed by publishing a start list of 117 – seven riders above the permitted 110 – the natural rate of attrition before the race gets underway should mean that everyone entered who wants to ride will get to compete.
If you are one of the few will be need to withdraw before the start or if you need to replace a junior rider, Joan McCullough can be contacted on [email protected].
