Ireland’s Eoin Mullen has gotten his European Track Championships campaign off to a strong start, setting a personal best time in the U23 1km TT; his first event of the campaign in Portugal.
He finished 11th in the 18-man field, clocking a time of 1:05.131. That was marginally faster than his time in the London World Cup back in February, when he recorded his previous personal best of 1:05.281.
Mullen was 3.054 down on the winning time of France’s Quentin Lafarque in the kilo final in Portugal yesterday. The flying Frenchman was defending the title he won last year.
Hugo Haak from Holland was second, some 0.370 down on the winner with Krzysztof of Poland rounding off the podium some 0.440 down.

Mullen’s average speed for the test was 55.273kmph, a very good ride for the ever improving first-year U23 rider.
He takes in the sprint event tomorrow, which also runs into Friday for the riders who progress into the final rounds. The Irishman then completes his campaign with the keirin event on the last day of the championships on Sunday.

The 18-year-old is from Kilronan on the Aran Islands but went to school at Kings Hospital, Dublin. His older brother is on a rugby scholarship in the US while his younger sister and two younger brothers are track cyclists who currently hold a number of underage titles.
Mullen has been working on his cycling for more than a year at the UCI’s World Cycling Centre in Aigle in Switzerland, where he has been part of the scholarship programme.
