Spectator appears to throw liquid at Marianne Vos in OHN | Video

Marianne Vos, in yellow in the chasing group, appeared to have liquid thrown over her during her victorious ride at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad

Marianne Vos (Visma Lease a Bike) has taken a brilliant win in her debut ride at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad (1.WWT), outsprinting world champion Lotte Kopecky (Team SD Worx-Protime) from a four-rider lead group.

Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) rounded out the podium, despite dangling off the back of the leading group in the final 15km, after her solo breakaway had been cancelled out. Shirin van Anrooij (Lidl-Trek) placed 4th.

Vos was straight onto the back wheel of Kopecky when she squeezed the pedals in the finale in an effort to get clear. That included the Belgian's effort on Muur van Geraardsbergen. That attack dragged the lead group away from a larger select group with about 16km remaining, while Kopecky later tried again on the Bosberg.

It was a case of Kopecky turning the screw, Vos closely marking her and the Lidl-Trek duo of Longo Borghini and van Anrooij struggling to stay with them, but succeeding in that task. While van Anrooij attacked with about 6km to go, it was Vos who went after her.

“It was my debut here in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and you want to give it your all," Vos said. "I couldn’t believe that it would be enough for the win today, but I’m really, really happy."

However, she also confirmed that somebody on the side of the road had thrown liquid over her, where she was seen to wipe her face immediately after the incident.

“I did indeed get something over me. That is not part of it and it is a shame, but yes... It happened,” Vos said on the incident - on the right in the video below.
