Video: Snow on some of Irish cycling's most popular training routes

This was the scene on the climbs of Wicklow today; biting cold with a covering of snow on the ground. Djonyy Gomes, a Brazilian racing on the Irish road scene, got some great shots, below.

Some of Ireland’s most popular routes for cyclists have witnessed the first snow of the year, with more expected for the remainder of the week

The snowy conditions hit parts of Cork and Kerry on Tuesday – County Bounds between the two being covered as one of the videos below shows.

And as the photos that Djonyy Gomes took, below and above, reveal; the climbs of Wicklow were also covered today.

Gomes, a Brazilian based in Ireland who races on the domestic scene, braved the elements with his camera phone and selfie stick. And his photos are pretty cool.

As riders all over the country prepare for the racing and sportive season, our plans may be interrupted again this year by the weather.

Met Eireann is predicting turbo training conditions, with a ‘status yellow warning applying nationwide set to last until the weekend.

Its forecasters are predicting frequent shows of snow as well as sleet and hail in the southwest, north west and west.

Snowfall accumulations were being predicted for Wednesday morning. Sally Gap in Wicklow was already classified as likely to be impassable in coming days.

And even though conditions may not worsen too much on Wednesday, snowy conditions are forecast nationwide on Wednesday and Thursday.

Temperatures will drop to between 0 and -3C, with frost and icy roads forecast, as well as falling snow sticking in many places, according to Met Éireann’s John Eagleton

"The big threat of snow this week is on Wednesday night and during Thursday,” he said.

“The winds turn easterly in direction and as the pressure to the south of Ireland injects moisture to those easterly winds.

"Once that threat passes, it will remain cold and frosty for Friday and the weekend. And then temperatures will start to creep up again at the start of next week.
